One of the biggest myths surrounding solar PV is that a roof with shade isn’t suitable for solar. While this may have been true many years ago, modern panel-level optimisation has transformed what’s possible.
At Bright Spark Energy we’ve spent over 15 years designing and installing premium solar PV and battery storage systems across West Sussex, East Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey, Kent and the South of England. One of the most common questions we’re asked is whether trees, chimneys or neighbouring buildings make solar uneconomical.
In many cases, the answer is no.
Can solar panels work in the shade?
Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. Partial shading will reduce generation, but intelligent system design and modern optimisation technologies can dramatically reduce its impact.
Every property is unique. We assess roof orientation, seasonal shading, electricity consumption, future energy requirements, battery storage, EV charging and whole home backup before recommending the best solution.
Does one shaded panel affect the whole system?
Traditional string inverter systems connect multiple panels together, meaning one shaded panel can reduce the performance of others.
Modern optimisation changes this completely.
SolarEdge optimisers
SolarEdge uses intelligent power optimisers behind every panel. Each optimiser allows its panel to operate independently, improving performance on complex roofs while providing detailed panel-level monitoring.
SolarEdge also incorporates SafeDC™ technology. When the inverter is switched off or AC power is isolated, the optimisers automatically reduce DC voltage to a safer level, helping protect installers, maintenance engineers and emergency services.
Benefits include:
- Excellent performance on partially shaded roofs
- Panel-level monitoring
- Greater design flexibility
- Easier fault finding
- Integrated SafeDC™ safety technology
- Excellent battery integration
Enphase microinverters
Enphase places a microinverter beneath every panel. Each panel converts DC to AC individually, meaning shading on one panel has very little effect on neighbouring panels.
Because there are no long high-voltage DC strings across the roof, Enphase also provides important electrical safety benefits while making future expansion straightforward.
Benefits include:
- Outstanding performance on shaded roofs
- Individual panel monitoring
- Excellent multi-orientation performance
- Improved electrical safety
- Easy expansion
Better performance. Better safety.
Optimisation isn’t only about generating more electricity.
It also improves safety, maintainability and long-term reliability.
At Bright Spark Energy we design every installation with careful consideration for:
- Safe cable routing
- Roof access
- Emergency isolation
- Battery location
- Fire safety
- Future servicing
- RC62 and RC67 best practice where applicable
Battery storage & whole home backup
Optimised solar systems work brilliantly with battery storage. By storing surplus energy you can reduce electricity bills, charge from off-peak tariffs and power your home during outages.
With systems such as Sigenergy and Tesla Powerwall, together with the appropriate backup gateway, many homes can benefit from Whole Home Backup, keeping lighting, heating, broadband, refrigeration, home offices and security systems running during a power cut.
